Creating a Template (Exporting)

Any Relay.app workflow can be shared via a link as a template that others can use as a starting point.

Links to templates are yours to share – Relay.app won't publish them anywhere unless you submit them to our Gallery.

You decide with whom and where to share, and you may disable and re-enable at any time.

Exporting your workflow as a template

1. Get your workflow ready

Follow these best practises before generating a template link:

  • Make sure your workflow doesn't have any errors, to make it easy for those who import it

  • Rename steps in your workflow to make clear why it's there. This will help importers understand what it does

  • Add Workflow Notes with guidance for importers on how to get started using your template, and any specifics they will need to adjust/tweak

2. Click 'Export as template' from the overflow menu in the Editor

From the [...] overflow menu, click 'Export as template'

3. Add a template description

Before generating the template link, add a template description. This description will be shown to importers before they import your template.

Add a description to before generating the template link

Click 'Export and generate template link' to generate a unique template link for this workflow.

The template link will not be shared anywhere by Relay.app. You decide with whom and where to share, and you may disable and re-enable these links at any time.

Click 'Export and generate template link' to generate a unique link

You'll see a confirmation in the dialog with the the uniquely generated link. You can copy this link from here, and share it with others. Note that this link is not the same as the workflow link you're using to edit your workflow.

5. Confirm that the template imports properly

Before sharing the template link with others, test it yourself by pasting the link in your browser and importing the template in your own workspace. Every time a template is imported, it will create a new workflow, so it won't overwrite existing workflows.

Feel free to share template links on social media, and we won't mind if you tag us ☺️

To disable the link of a template, switch the toggle in the exporting dialog to the 'off' state.

When a link is disabled, the link won't work any more, even for people that have previously received it.

When a template link is disabled, it won't work anymore

To re-enable the template link for a workflow that was previously shared as a template but then disabled/turned off, click 'Export as template' again in the [...] overflow menu of the Editor, and turn the toggle back to the 'on' state.

The link of a template stays the same, even after disabling and re-enabling it. So it will work again for people that have received the link in the past.

To create a new link, duplicate the workflow and export the new workflow.

Updating a template to the latest version of the workflow

After you've made changes to a workflow that's exported as a template, you'll need to explicitly update the template to adopt these changes.

To do so, click on the globe icon in the header or the 'Export workflow as template' menu in the [...] overflow menu, and click 'Update template based on current workflow'

The link of the template stays the same after it's updated to reflect the latest version of the workflow.

To create a new link, first duplicate the workflow and export the new workflow.

Understanding which workflows are exported as a template

When a workflow is shared as a template, you'll notice a globe icon next to its name in the list.

The globe icon is also shown in the Editor. Clicking on it will invoke the 'export' dialog (which you can also still access via the [...] overflow menu in the Editor).

FAQ

How can I see whether a workflow is exported as a template

In the Editor, workflows that are exported as a template have a globe icon in the header.

In the Workflows list, you'll see the icon as well:

Can I see who imported my template

No. Importing a template is anonymous, the template creator will not see who imported a template, or how many times it has been imported

Why can't I create a template for a workflow that uses Sequences?

This is a known limitation at the moment which we plan to address in the future.

You can create templates from Sequences themselves, though!
